Castelnuovo Berardenga, Siena,
Italy
The genesis of the Museo del Paesaggio dates back to the 1980s, when the Provincial Administration of Siena launched a museum system project. The museum, housed in a late 19th-century building that until a few years earlier had been used as a public slaughterhouse, opened to the public in 1999. The exhibition was curated by geographers Bruno Vecchio and Cristina Capineri, who conceived a path in which the educational vocation and a broad interdisciplinary perspective prevailed, which included references to philosophy, art history, geography, anthropology, economics, literature, cinema and architecture. Over time, also thanks to the initiative of the then director Sandra Becucci, the museum has pursued a path of in-depth study of the models of landscape representation in its environmental, aesthetic and cultural aspects.
